Something extraordinary happened at the Barbican Hall when the BBC Symphony Orchestra, led by Carlo Rizzi, performed a concert version of the final variant that Giacomo Puccini's made of La Rondine with a spectacular cast. La Rondine is a masterpiece where we see Puccini experimenting and growing, as the chromatic schemes and orchestral structures that would later appear in his great final works develop within him. But the final variant that Puccini wrote was never been heard before, and the Opera Rara label, which is preparing a studio recording of it, organized this concert at the Barbican Hall to present it live.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra made this Puccini sound brilliant, compact, and full of nuances. The orchestra's sound was perfectly balanced between winds and strings, and Carlo Rizzi's conducting played a significant role in this, characterized by careful tempi, the delicacy of his exigent conducting, and his rapport with the singers.

Truly, the star of the evening was Ermonela Jaho's Magda de Civry. The soprano is a unique Puccini interpreter worldwide; her performances move audiences wherever she goes and are imbued with remarkable drama and plasticity. Her Magda was delightful and stellar, with great breath control, yet without any harshness, and with an endless sense of poetry.

Iván Ayón-Rivas embodied Ruggero Lastouc. The Peruvian tenor is one of the most promising voices on the current scene, and in this Puccini role, he sang extraordinarily. All his interpretation was exuberant and timeless.

Nicola Alaimo was a powerful and lively Rambaldo with a mellow voice. Also, noteworthy were: Ellie Neate as Lisette and Juan Francisco Gatell as Prunier, two voices full of future potential and musicality. Noteworthy were the singers Jessica Robinson, Julieth Lozano Rolong, Joanna Harries, and Robert Lewis, who demonstrated a high level of technical skill.

This was a unique and unforgettable evening, where we heard the best performers interpret a nearly new piece, and we felt very privileged by the brilliant event programmed by Opera Rara.

Algo extraordinario sucedió en el Barbican Hall cuando la BBC Symphony Orchestra con Carlo Rizzi a la cabeza se dispuso a ofrecer una versión concierto de última versión de La Rondine de Giacomo Puccini con un reparto espectacular. La Rondine es una obra maestra donde vemos a Puccini experimentar y crecer, mientras van creciendo dentro de sí los esquemas cromáticos y las estructuras orquestales que más tarde hará aparecer en sus grandes obras finales. Pero nunca antes se escuchó la última versión que Puccini escribió de ella y el sello Opera Rara, que prepara una grabación de estudio, organizó este concierto en el Barbican Hall para presentarla en directo.

La BBC Symphony Orchestra hizo sonar este Puccini de forma brillante, compacta y llena de matices. El sonido de la orquesta resulta equilibrado entre viento y cuerdo y la dirección de Carlo Rizzi, en este sentido, tuvo mucho que ver y estuvo marcada por los tempi cuidadosos, la delicadeza de su dirección y su compenetración con los cantantes.

Realmente, la estrella de la noche era la Magda de Civry cantada por Ermonela Jaho. La soprano es una interprete de Puccini única en todo el mundo, sus interpretaciones emocionan allí dónde ella va y están impregnadas de un dramatismo y una plasticidad notables. Su Magda fue deliciosa y estelar, con gran dominio de fiato, pero sin estridencias y con un sentido poético sin fin.

Esta fue una velada única e irrepetible, donde escuchamos a los mejores interpretar una pieza casi nueva y nos sentimos muy privilegiados por el brillante acontecimiento que Opera Rara programó.
