The Polish National Opera, Wielkie Głosy: Camila Nylund, Tomasz Konieczny

Last Sunday, the Polish National Opera in Warsaw hosted a concert featuring music from Richard Wagner's operas. It was part of the Wielkie Głosy (Great Voices) concert series, which began in the 2025/2026 season. The two guest stars, Camila Nylund and Tomasz Konieczny, both excelled in their signature repertoire. The concert began with a brilliant performance of The Flying Dutchman overture by the Polish National Opera orchestra, conducted by Robert Jindra. This piece set the tone for the whole evening. Tomasz Konieczny then completely captured the audience's attention with his incredible voice and captivating stage presence. Singing ‘Die Frist ist um... Wie oft Meeres tiefsten Schlund’ from The Flying Dutchman, without any stage decorations or costumes, he presented the audience with a fully rounded character and a complete story. He painted this whole image with his very strong, resonant, deep bass-baritone voice. Importantly, his great dramatic skill helped him maintain clarity, with each phrase landing with great precision.

The Wagnerian story, as told on stage, was brought to life when Camila Nylund joined Tomasz Konieczny for a duet, ‘Wie aus der Ferne längst vergangner Zeiten.’ She charmed the audience with her extraordinary, internationally refined technique. Her powerful soprano voice has a magical lightness to it. Only occasionally was this lightness overpowered by the orchestra. Nevertheless, her performance of the ‘Liebestod’ from Tristan and Isolde, which concluded the first half of the concert, left the audience eagerly awaiting the finale.

Camila Nylund’s performance in the second half of the show was the most memorable. Together with Tomasz Konieczny, she sang the third act of The Valkyrie. Throughout this section, her performance felt effortless and airy. With Tomasz Konieczny again they dragged spectators in the story, sharing emotions, forcing spectators to join them in their doubt and despair. The dramatic atmosphere the singers, the orchestra and Robert Jindra created was palpable. Both artists demonstrated how to tell a fascinating story with limited stage movement and perfectly timed gestures and facial expressions, as well as their truly great voices.

The evening would not have been so incredible without the orchestra’s exquisite performance, conducted by Robert Jindre. Together, they created the perfect foundation for the singers, enabling them to shine on stage. The show was a great success, receiving a standing ovation. The audience's enthusiasm was rewarded with three encores. Camila Nylund performed Jean Sibelius’s ‘Var det en dröm,’ and Tomasz Konieczny sang ‘Kozak,’ composed by Stanisław Moniuszko. The evening concluded with a duet from Richard Strauss’s Arabella.

El pasado domingo, la Ópera Nacional de Polonia en Varsovia acogió un concierto con música de las óperas de Richard Wagner. Formaba parte de la serie de conciertos Wielkie Głosy (Grandes Voces), iniciada en la temporada 2025/2026. Las dos estrellas invitadas, Camila Nylund y Tomasz Konieczny, destacaron en su repertorio característico. El concierto comenzó con una brillante interpretación de la obertura de El holandés errante a cargo de la orquesta de la Ópera Nacional de Polonia, dirigida por Robert Jindra. Esta pieza marcó el tono de toda la velada. A continuación, Tomasz Konieczny captó por completo la atención del público con su increíble voz y su cautivadora presencia escénica. Encantó al público con su extraordinaria técnica refinada a nivel internacional. Su potente voz de soprano posee una ligereza mágica, que solo en contadas ocasiones fue superada por la orquesta. Aun así, su interpretación del «Liebestod» de Tristán e Isolda, que cerró la primera parte del concierto, dejó al público esperando con impaciencia el final.

La actuación de Camila Nylund en la segunda parte del espectáculo fue la más memorable. Junto a Tomasz Konieczny, interpretó el tercer acto de La valquiria. A lo largo de esta sección, su interpretación se percibió fluida y etérea. Junto a Konieczny, arrastraron a los espectadores dentro de la historia, compartiendo emociones y obligándolos a acompañarlos en sus dudas y desesperación. La atmósfera dramática creada por los cantantes, la orquesta y Robert Jindra era palpable. Ambos artistas demostraron cómo contar una historia fascinante con movimientos escénicos limitados y gestos y expresiones faciales perfectamente sincronizados, además de sus verdaderamente grandes voces.

La velada no habría sido tan increíble sin la exquisita interpretación de la orquesta, dirigida por Robert Jindra. Juntos crearon la base perfecta para los cantantes, permitiéndoles brillar en el escenario. El espectáculo fue un gran éxito y recibió una ovación de pie. El entusiasmo del público fue recompensado con tres bises. Camila Nylund interpretó «Var det en dröm» de Jean Sibelius, y Tomasz Konieczny cantó «Kozak», compuesta por Stanisław Moniuszko. La velada concluyó con un dúo de Arabella de Richard Strauss.
