Endlich wieder richtige Oper
Der fliegende Holländer am 6. August 2026 war ein echter Operngenuss. Endlich.
Alle drei waren in diesem Moment in Topform.
Ganz abgesehen davon klang Kares an diesem Abend ziemlich übersungen.

Finally, real opera again
Der fliegende Holländer on 6 August 2026 was a genuine operatic pleasure. Finally. After the Ring as an AI project and a Parsifal that, without the AR glasses, now consists of only half its original concept, this was, for me, the only real opera in Bayreuth this year. By now, the audience also seems to have become very fond of Dmitri Tcherniakov’s production and responded with strong applause.
For me, the concept works completely. Tcherniakov tells the story of the Dutchman in a small-minded provincial town where social exclusion, confinement and the desire to break free are at the centre. It is not actually all that far removed from the work. The Dutchman returns to the town after many years like a mafia boss with his gang, seeking revenge for the loss of his mother. Senta is a pubescent, emotionally unstable young woman trying to find herself and escape this narrow-minded life. It all fits.
The ending works as well. The madness of this society and its characters ends with a bang. Tcherniakov needs neither the sea nor a ghost ship to achieve that. His direction of the characters is precise enough for the story to work anyway. After several years in Bayreuth, this production has, for me, gained rather than lost something.
And then this production meets a musical ensemble that offers the highest level of artistry on this evening.
A storm that comes from within
With a one-year break, Oksana Lyniv is now conducting Der fliegende Holländer in Bayreuth for the fifth year, and you can hear just how much her interpretation has grown over time. New subtleties keep emerging. Above all, you can sense how closely she works with the Festival Orchestra. That allows her enormous flexibility in both tempo and dynamics.
Her articulation is very direct and angular. With Lyniv, the storm does not simply take place at sea. You feel the storm within yourself: this inability to arrive anywhere, this permanent restlessness. It can be very loud and fast, then suddenly very slow and soft. These contrasts work extremely well.
At the same time, Lyniv always gives the singers time and space. She does not simply push through her own tempo but listens to the stage and reacts. In Wagner, that is every bit as important as the great orchestral sound.
The ending was particularly strong. Lyniv stretched the redemption motif to its absolute limit. The final D-major chord emerged from the depths of piano and gradually built up until it finally exploded in a genuine fortissimo bang.
This woman can conduct Wagner!
Brownlee is a show-off
Nicholas Brownlee as the Dutchman is luxury casting. And Brownlee is a show-off. He knows exactly what enormous vocal material he has at his disposal, and he makes full use of it. The Dutchman is precisely the kind of role in which a heroic baritone can show what his voice is capable of. And that is exactly what he does.
What is particularly incredible is not only that every word is brilliantly understandable, but that every single syllable is filled with life. That is something truly special. Of course, his best scenes are those in which he can unleash the full volume of his voice. Then this huge sound fills the house while still retaining shape and clarity of text. But Brownlee also sounds excellent in the ensemble. In duets and trios, he can pull back without losing any of his presence.
A different Senta
Senta was recast compared with the first performance. It was not really necessary, as Elisabeth Teige had set the standard with her Senta. Now Asmik Grigorian sang the role, as she had in the premiere year, and hers is a completely different Senta.
Her interpretation unquestionably has its strengths as well. She has a beautiful, powerful voice, and her acting suits this Senta very well. Tcherniakov’s young, emotionally extreme character is particularly well suited to her dramatically.
In the Ballad, however, she pushed herself a little too hard. Towards the end, she audibly reached the limits of her stamina, resulting in a few genuinely unpleasant notes. That was a pity because, before that, one could hear very clearly what this voice is capable of. For me, Grigorian did not quite reach the level of Elisabeth Teige’s Senta from the first performance on this evening.
Bruns turns Erik into a leading character
Benjamin Bruns as Erik is luxury casting. The Siegfried of Munich and Salzburg is now setting standards, and he accordingly turns this rather thankless role into something much bigger. With Bruns, Erik does not fade into a supporting role but becomes a genuine protagonist.
Bruns has a bright, ringing voice that is warm at the same time. You understand every word, not only with your ears but with your heart. Erik’s pain becomes genuinely understandable. He also reaches every high note without any apparent difficulty and has all the necessary power to cut through the orchestra. This is a true heroic voice.
The musical highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the trio in Act III with Brownlee, Grigorian and Bruns. Wow. Three world-class voices that sound completely different and work so well together precisely because of that. All three were in top form at that moment. You do not forget something like that very quickly.
Daland does not suit Kares
Mika Kares is a very experienced bass, but for me he is much better suited to darker and more sinister roles. His voice does not really fit Daland.
Quite apart from that, Kares sounded rather over-sung on this evening. There were several unpleasant notes, and especially in Daland’s many lyrical passages, the voice remained too pale and lacking in expression. On stage, he portrays the character convincingly and fits well into Tcherniakov’s direction. Vocally, however, this Daland was not satisfying on this evening.
Strong casting even in the smaller roles
Nadine Weissmann is a very good Mary. Her voice has wonderful depth while retaining plenty of elegance in the middle register. Her acting works very well too. This was a very good piece of casting.
The same applies to Kieran Carrel as the Steersman. Even at his young age, he already has a voice capable of producing genuine heroic tones, with considerable carrying power. For such a small role, that is striking. This is a singer to keep an eye on.
